The colonization of Western Europe greatly affected the culture of the countries. Here is the colonization history of each country in Western Europe:
Austria- In the first century BC, The Roman empire conquered the area that is now Austria. Over the next few centuries the area is taken over by the Franks (later known as French) and the Germans and people still flourished. In the 12th century, the Holy Roman Emperor made Austria a Duchy and appointed the leader as a Duke. Austria continued to prosper in the next few centuries, still affected by past ruling countries. Belgium - Belgium was originally part of the Low Countries that contained present-day Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. After a revolt in 1567, Belgium was then overtaken by the Spanish, French, Austrian, and the Netherlands. Once Belgium was its own country, Belgium colonized various African countries. France -France was originally part of the Celtic territory known as Gaul and was overtaken by the Roman Empire and the Germans until it was its own country. France colonized much of North America and some South America as well as various countries in Africa. France has overtaken many Asian and European countries during the different rules and empires. Germany - Germany originally came from the Germanic tribes of the region. They were extremely aggressive and were able to remain independent from other empires while conquering lands for themselves. In the more modern times, Germany colonized a few countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Uganda, Cameroon, Tanzania, and Namibia are all African countries formerly under German rule. Germany did not enforce strict re-molding of culture in these areas nor did it send settlers to profit from Africa. The main impact was the deaths of rebel uprisings within Africa. Liechtenstein- The Rhine plateau has been settled upon for centuries by the Holy Roman Empire. The principality of Liechtenstein was formed under the Roman Empire in 1719. In the 1800s, Liechtenstein became a part of the Confederation of Rhine and later a part of the German Confederation. Liechtenstein became independent in 1866. Luxembourg - Luxembourg was conquered by the Roman Empire and then its own country until the Kingdom of Burgundian overtook it. Then it was under control of Habsburgs, the Netherlands, Austria, then the Netherlands again. Monaco - Monaco was originally conquered and settled by the Roman Empire. After the Empire’s fall, the Grimaldi family rose to power in Monaco and made it under the sovereignty of the Republic of Genoa. During the French Revolution, Monaco went under France’s rule and eventually became a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia. During this time, Italian Monégasque dialect (Italian mixed with French) became the official language. Monaco’s independent sovereignty was finally recognized in 1861. Netherlands - The Netherlands were under rule of the Roman Empire, but then revolted to form their own country. The Dutch colonized some of the Americas as well as other lands in Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Switzerland - Switzerland was first inhabited by Celtic and Germanic tribes, then conquered by the Roman Empire until made its own country. |
